Happy National Hiking Day! It’s time to go out and celebrate. Whether you decide to go on a nearby trail or a trip to a national park, there are a number of activities to choose from. Relax from the computer and the burden of life. You and your dog deserve an adventure!
Why we observe the day
National Take a Hike Day was approved by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. Since then, Congress has worked to add more historic trails to the National Trail System. There are 11 scenic national trails and 423 national parks in the United States. Get a pair of boots, your backpack and use the hashtag #NationalTakeaHikeDay for your photos!
Where you should celebrate
Looking for an escape in the middle of the week? Stroll along the nearby footpaths and enjoy the scenic views of the autumn greenery. Be sure to check the pet restrictions before bringing your puppy with you. Check out this list for some of the best campsites suitable for dogs to explore!
What to bring
The best way to prepare for a hike is to pack your luggage in advance. Bring lots of food, water and dog treats to share along the way. Let your puppy try a dog backpack to help relieve the load. Knowing what to wear can help you have a better hiking experience.
How to stay safe
The footpaths come with many unknowns. Be safe by planning your route in advance and keeping a leash on your dog. In general, hiking with your dog should be fun and safe at the same time. For more details on how to stay safe during your hike, read more here.
