I like to travel with dogs. For me, driving is just the simplest and most convenient way to visit many places with a puppy. Louis and I made several long trips to Europe suitable for dogs, but our experience in the United States was limited. All this will change.
The great adventure of Louis and Jenna
Louis and I will spend most of March on an epic trip to California! Starting in the San Francisco Bay Area, we will climb the Napa Valley to Humboldt Redwoods State Park. In a few days in Mendocino County, we will start driving south on California State Road 1. I hope to follow the famous coastal highway most of the way down to San Diego.
Our trip to California will take us with Louis across the Pacific to Jenner, Santa Cruz and Cumbria. There will be time for a longer stay (and laundry) in the dog-friendly cities of Carmel, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and Laguna Beach. Or at least that’s the plan for now.
One of the advantages of traveling with dogs is that you have the freedom to be spontaneous. You can stop, if necessary, and explore places “off the beaten track” that look interesting along the way. Having a car also gives the little ones a safe, familiar place to relax.
I always use a back seat cover when traveling with Louis. The hammock style does a particularly good job of protecting both the car’s interior and the dog’s. I also use a specialized attachment for seat belts for dogs. Wearing a familiar blanket from home makes the back seat even more comfortable.
Planning a trip suitable for dogs
Creating a great trip suitable for dogs requires work. Fortunately, there are some excellent resources available online. Here are some of my favorites:
BringFido.com – Provides detailed information and reviews on hotels, restaurants and services in the US and overseas. DogFriendly.com – Offers online and printed guides to destinations GoPetFriendly.com – There is a fantastic travel organizer showing hotels, restaurants and activities suitable for dogs around your route.
I also use Tripadvisor and my other tricks to choose the best hotels suitable for dogs. If you want to see our planned routes, please see my travel map.
